Police Traveled 500 Miles To Seize Girl’s Pet Goat for Slaughter –
“A federal civil lawsuit alleges that sheriff’s deputies from Shasta County, California, traveled across the state to seize a little girl’s “beloved pet goat” for slaughter. New reporting details how they may have violated the law in doing so.
According to the lawsuit, in June 2022, Jessica Long and her daughter, who was 9 years old and only referred to as E.L., attended the Shasta District Fair. The fair includes a junior livestock auction, in which members of 4-H youth programs exhibit farm animals they’ve raised. At the end, the animals are sold to the highest bidders to be slaughtered for meat. The fair takes 7 percent of the sale, and the kids get to keep the rest.
In April, Long purchased her daughter a goat, whom she named Cedar. From then until the fair, E.L. “fed and cared for Cedar every day.” She “bonded” with the animal just as she “would have bonded with a puppy” and “loved him as a family pet.””

I was in 4H and backed out of the rabbits after the first meeting because they make sure you know what will happen after fair. I stayed with photography but didn't even do anything for it, submitted nothing. Zero repercussions. The family could have backed out any time before the auction. The 4H board was also crappy but everyone sucks except Cedar and that poor little girl
$900? Dang your meat is ridiculously expensive. In Namibia you can 15 goats for that price.
Why are you letting kids play with food over there? Why are you petting food anyway? Ceder the goat, what next Amy the pet chicken?

There are 4H programs with animals that do not include slaughter. Horsemanship for example. She’d been better off with a horse/ pony as an emotional companion than a animal being raised for meat. If the mom had just thought about it she could have had a bidder buy as high bidder buy the goat for her daughter that saved it from slaughter. She learned a good lesson. No what your program is about. If you don’t want to raise it for meat choose another program. She learned a good lesson. Now she can buy a baby goat and start all over on her own She no’s how to raise one. One can’t always change the rules. People in control love to make a lesson out of this kind of crap. Especially old white men. As I’m sure these are. Sad but lesson learned. Go on and get another emotional pet. Horses are still the best. 😉💞
Sorry to be the downer here, but other than the extreme police response you report, the 4H is in the right here. (And even that police response might have mitigating circumstances you didn't report.)
Your llustration of a little girl bonded to a little goat completely distorts the point of 4H, which is specifically to start early training of farmers and ranchers.
It's not a pet adoption program, very much like the guide dogs for the blind program is not an adoption program.
Don't you realize innumerable children and adults have to go through this experience? It's what they signed up for. It's a service to yourself, and to the community. And like it or not, service most often includes sacrifices.
If you don't believe in using and/or killing our domesticated animals make that argument. But don't play games with people's emotions by distorting the issue to your advantage.
Humans can be so disgusting. This is so heartbreaking. What kind of monster are you to take a goat from a child and murder the poor animal. The only lesson this child learned is you can’t trust the police and adults to do the right thing and be kind.

4h had a perfect opportunity to turn this into good publicity for their whole program… they chose… differently…

This ALL could have been easily avoided if they asked a few questions like I did when I joined 4H in Jr high. On day two, I asked some questions and I found out that animal that I would raise will be slaughtered. I quit on day 2.
Children should be taught to disobey unjust rules and retaliate against injustice.
The cops are useless scumbags that are a active detriment to society at best and at worse a active threat to the safety and all that live in it, never call the pigs and never talk to them

How many children have been traumatized by 4h. I was in 4h in school but I was allowed to join with no animals. I worked on farms so if they could do that then why not sell it back. It just sounds like a wasted PR stunt. If they would have sold it back to the family they could have had a feel good story. Instead they look horrible, kill a little girls goat or get on local news for showing empathy. It doesn't reflect well on the company that bought it
Cruelty is what 4-H is about. They do demonstrable damage to society.

Sounds like the 4-H program, they encourage children to raise animals, they are rated on how well they did, and then the animals are auctioned off where the new owner decides what to do next. This is a part of Farming life though and kids learn very early on not to become attached to their 4-H project animals, like they would the animals that are "pets"
This is partially the Parents fault for not reading the fine print, for not familiarizing themselves with the program. AND not telling the child that the animal is not fully legally theirs ( they are given the animal to raise) and after fair will be sold at auction to the highest bidder and be out of that child's life.

4H is child grooming to murder animals without empathy after raising them for months. This is exactly why i didn't join in school. I was brought up eating animals but I don't like it or prefer it. Tasting good isn't enough anymore.

Unfortunately the mother had to know that that is what happens to the "champions" at state fairs. She should have been told!!
I had to go send 4H an email to let them know what garbage people they are over this, and that it's costed them my support for 4H here in Ontario. Their actions have consequences, in this case, a $30 monthly donation has been cancelled. If they're garbage in one place, they are garbage everywhere.
Oh, and kids should learn there are exceptions to rules, we make exceptions for the fucking rich all the time.
A reason to affirm why I'm a vegetarian is this disturbing 4-H incident that demonstrated how popular private businesses receive resource allocation preference. The fact that law enforcement prioritizes the finding and slaughtering of this goat while other theft "crimes" are essentially ignored is crap. While I believe raising your own live stock and legal hunting are greatly preferable to purchasing and consuming meat, this power play to dominate a child is more than questionable. I would wish karma to all those power flexers involved, but intentionally, harm to a pet is criminal and immoral.
Why didn't they make the kid watch the goat getting slaughtered while they were at it?
