This is a huge question I get asked constantly; how to light indoor photos for groups of people. Well here it is in the truth behind the scenes fashion on a REAL wedding when it started raining and we had to take family photos and some bridal party with this lighting setup for group photos indoors. This is a good lighting setup for wedding photography but I just used the exact same thing with a group of doctors just this afternoon.

Vanessa, great work and this video shows again why flash is sooooo good and important. Do you work most of the time on your own or with an assistant at weddings?
1) Great video and replies. I had been wondering about highlight tone priority and using the back panel on the shoot through. I love the idea of the umbrella for portability on a wedding day. This helped cement that as my modifier for the wedding I'm shooting in a few weeks. 2) You are a freaking saint for dealing with the amount of mansplaining in these comments. My jaw is on the floor with the audacity of some of these dudes.
Vanessa, why are you using a diffusor on the back of the umbrella?
$379 for an umbrella, I seriously hope you guys don't do this. I've killed my fair share of 86 inch "parabolic" (not) umbrellas and sailed away on quite a few 60 inchers. Umbrella's are limited time use items and should cost as such.

This is a very good video with lots of valuable information. In my opinion it was kind of jarring to be constantly going from horizontal to vertical orientation all the time. I know it is trendy to use vertical mode, but if part of the video is shot in one mode, I recommend all the video be shot that way.
Hi – what was the setting you mentioned for protecting the highlights on the Canon?
Usually, you put the pancake behind the Bride and the Bride is turned thirty degrees to slim down her posterior. If a Bride posterior is closer to the lenses, it will enlarge the posterior in relation to the rest of the body and the pancake in front of it will make the posterior look huge.
so flat more like on camera flash , you could get much better result with bouncing 2 speedlights

My large umbrella doesn't have a diffuser to put on the back, how much does that matter?
Hey Vanessa, I like that you used a large shoot thru umbrella. I would never thought to use that. I’ve always used two shallow shoot thru umbrellas. I should get the same results with my B2. What was your max power level?
