A welcome reminder that often we should take a moment to just enjoy photography for its own sake.
Good topic! Informative and inspirational as always. My "therapy setups" are setups and subjects which to help me think differently and creatively than I normally would. To me, this "therapy camera" scenario is about restricting the setup and subject-matter in a confined boundary that I am not comfortable or familiar with. So that it forced me to think through the limitation and be creative. Lately, I am playing with Nikon V1+10mm at lowlight for B&W; trying to get back in touch with something I never get good at back in my film shooting days. (certainly with digital, it's far more economical when it comes to learning and experimenting 😆) I also go out with my GX85+Nikon 100mm f/2.8 Series E for landscape; the type of combination that I don't naturally gravitate to. Thanks for the inspiration! Happy shooting!
I'm a bit embarrassed to admit it, but the camera I use the most is the Leica C-Lux. I carry it in my pocket on those days when I'm not "out doing photography" with my more sophisticated equipment. The focal range from 24mm to 360mm allows me the opportunity to capture whatever may come up. For example, two weeks ago I was taking a photo of the Fort Casey State Park (Washington state) lighthouse as the ferry was arriving at Whidbey Island from Port Townsend. The lens was extended to the maximum. I didn't see it when I took the photo, but when I looked at the picture on the computer, I could clearly see in the foreground an orca that had jumped out of the water the instant I snapped the shutter. In the photo it was completely in the air, with a spray of water where it had breached. I couldn't have planned that. Two days ago, there was a large flock of trumpeter swans on Crockett Lake opposite the ferry dock on Whidbey Island. (I take the ferry to Whidbey Island once a week on personal business, but I don't want to be bogged down with big or heavy gear. A pocket camera is useful for that.)
Love all of this. Totally agree about just running with one prime once in a while. I love setting to 1:1 crop ratio and using a slightly contrasty monochrome picture profile, that’s my therapy mode 🙂📷
I love how you call this camera simple. Lut, etc. Really? That is simple?
I loved the Hasselblad SWC in my film days and I get much of the same point of view with my Z7and a Voigtlander 15mm. I put the z settings on M and often go for a monochrome jpeg.
It makes enough time to see.
I like that! Simple and fun photo outing with no pressure during or after taking the photos. I agree with what you both said about therapy vs mindful camera. I feel the same way which explains the multiple cameras I have. They feel new after being on the shelf for a while and I get that excitement feeling reminiscent of when I first opened the box. I have the X100v and Q2 among many others, but for tomorrow’s hike in the Cascade Mountains I’m going with the ZS200 that I miss a lot. Thanks for sharing how I exactly feel about cameras and the act of simple photography.
So wonderful to see you two out together. You both got some nice images with your special setups. An enjoyable video. Thanks for posting.
My mindful camera is the original Fuji X100, on these mindful days I just shoot everything that catches my eye. Totally the opposite of pro work where deadlines, brief and budget often dictate how I have to work.
😊
I love that term 'Therapy camera'. Each day I go out walking with one prime lens of my choosing with my Leica CL. Shoot complete: manual, and take time composing something I find interesting. I come from the 'Old school using Film manual cameras so this type of photography comes natural.
I'm not sure I would equate therapy cameras with mindful cameras. All my film cameras from 4×5 to my Olympus RC are therapy cameras. I'm not sure I would list my 4×5's or rb67 or Bronica S2A as mindful in the sense you mean but they all provide me therapy. So perhaps there is a difference between these things.
Leigh, this isn't photography related at all.. I just wanted to tell you that I think your hair looks beautiful! ❤❤
