I don't know if I agree with the opening statement. I did a family shoot and had some mediocre expressions looking at the camera, but were in sharp focus. I was able to coax out some candid expressions of them looking at each other but these were sadly out of focus and therefore unusable. My point is, if people are paying you, you best be sure you have perfect focus most of the time. A great expression is useless if you don't capture it.
That said, if you want a good photograph, you have to master both. And I fully agree with teenagers and kids. They never seem to like having their pictures taken. Good tips here which I will add to my arsenal, thanks
