I both keep a spare emergency phone in my car glove box that I can swap my sim into, and also travel a lot and can switch a local sim into my phone instantly. The e-sim will absolutely stop me upgrading if it’s forced upon me.

I mistakenly bought the new iPad Air. Don’t particularly like the swipe up feature. Since I use an OtterBox case sometimes swiping up is almost impossible.
Anyhow about the esim in the iPad Air 5th gen. You can replace it with a real sim card. What happens if you forget password and do a simple reset? It wipes all cellular data!!! There’s no way to fix it without taking it back to Verizon and getting sim card.
Personally I am never purchasing another phone that doesn’t allow me to easily swap the battery!!!

Well not only apple and Samsung making devices. The consumers should wake up and punish them for removing features. Buy a Xiaomi or realme, you also can buy oppo or vivo or oneplus. Physical sim will never die. Punish them.
First was lack of charger then sim slot disappeared still own iphone x and 7 but I'm moving back to android 🤷♂️
I travel frequently countries due to my work and I have been using esim for very long time. And never had issue adding new Sim card. Even been to many asian countries and they always offered a physical sim alongside with QR code ( Esim). Maybe some countries don't offer esim but I have never seen one that does not offer. Even if they don't offer I'm sure they will now. For me its pain to remove the sim ( you need the small pit to remove which you can not find when you need it) You can have multiple Esim QR in your mail and you can access anytime when you travel and change your provider anytime… For me personally Esim is easier and safe ( People can not remove the sim from your mobile and access your information.)

This Apple slippery slope started with the non-removable battery, now you have non-removable sim.
This is tyranny. They always could record you with non-removable battery, now they can always have you connected with non-removable sim.
So sad. All I can say is make sure you have backup phones, I still have older phones with removable battery and SIM cards of course.
Pro of E sim – people have gotten mugged at gunpoint and their phones stolen from them. If it's E sim only then the thieves can't pop out the sim card and you'll be able to track your iPhone wherever no matter what

One thing you forgot to mention to is that the there still a few carriers that don’t support esim. Example my carrier doesn’t support eSIM, which is not a problem because I wanted to switch to iPhone for so long
