Kala was born to seven girls and spent her childhood growing up in a one-room house. Her elder sister Jayanthi, who acted as the female lead in the films Uthiripookkal and Bhutatha Pookkal. Kala’s second sister Girija learned Bharatanatyam at Kalasetra;Also dancers Thangam, who later learns dance from Raguraman Master, then Girija falls in love with and marries Raguraman Master and works as a dance teacher. Kala was born as the sixth daughter to her parents, leading choreographer Brinda, Kala’s younger sister.

Kala is a trained dancer. She dropped out of school and entered the film industry through the influence of her brother-in-law, Raghuram. Introduced as a dance assistant in 1982 at the age of 12, She got an opportunity in the K Balachander directed Kamal Haasan and Revathi’s Amrui Mannan. Then again she was chosen by K Balachander as the choreographer for “Puthu Puthu Arthangal” (1989).

Kala was earlier married to UAE-based businessman Govindarajan, brother of actress Sneha, in 1997. Kala initially moved to Dubai after her marriage, but the couple got divorced in 1999 as both had frequent problems due to disagreements.Returning to Chennai, she was fully focused on his work as a choreographer as usual. Soon Brenda controversially commented on Sneha’s dancing skills in a magazine.

In an interview a few years back, Brenda had said that among all the heroines, Sneha was the least able to dance and had not progressed at all since her debut.Sneha has lost some film opportunities in cinema due to Brinda and Kala. It is also said that she told some directors that Seneca did not know how to dance and denied him film opportunities.

Then Kamala Haasan gave an opportunity to Sneha to act in his film. Then Sneha refrained from acting in many films a year and insisted on the directors to have a strong character even if it was one film and gave many successful films.

Afterthat, kala master fell in love with and married Mahesh in 2004. The couple had a son named Vidyut in 2007. One of her cousins ​​Prasanna Sujith is also a film choreographer. Also actress and choreographer Gayathri Raghuram, daughter of the late Raghuram Master and kala’s sister Girija. Keerthi Shantanu is a daughter of Jayanthi Master and wife of actor Shantanu Bhagyaraj and Kala’s another sister daughter. Keerthy made her debut as a host on the dance reality show Manada Mayilada.

Kala Master has worked on more than 4000 songs in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi, Kannada, Oriya, Bengali, English, Italian and Japanese languages.Her dance performance in the song “Kozhi Koovum Neramachu” from the movie Alaghan is very notable. She also mentions actress Panupriya as her favorite dancer. In 1996, Kala Master was given the opportunity to choreograph for the Miss World beauty pageant held in Bangalore.

She started the first film dance college called Kalavin Kalalaya in Chennai. She manages it along with her sisters. Kala master won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Choreography for her work in Chandramukhi.

Kala was so popular as a choreographer that she was commissioned to judge over 300 shows in India and abroad including USA, UK, Australia, Dubai. Her major dance performances include the Chandramukhi film dance event and the Japan Expo dance event.

A ‘Natiya Tarakai’ award and Kala has won several awards including Filmfare Awards and Screen Awards for her outstanding performance as a choreographer. The National Film Award for Best Choreographer in 2000 for the folk dance sequences in the Malayalam film Kochu Kochu Santoshangal was awarded to the then President of India K.R. Narayanan Avargalal was presented.Kala and Brinda are some of the most talented personalities in South Indian cinema.
