Surely it makes people think twice about having huge squads of kids that the tax payers have to keep..

Two child benefits is a luxury and personally it should be drop to one as it is a luxury are parents who can afford a second child should pay for them , all tax payers shouldn't pay for unreasonable parents.
    That should save a fortune.

The crocodile tears of some on the Left are frankly idiotic. Public finances aren't a bottomless pit, to begin with. Secondly, how about some personal responsibility, instead of relying for everything and anything on the welfare state? And thirdly, I'd rather free childcare – so parent(s) can go back to work – than child benefits for 3,4,5, etc. kids that associate with NO EVIDENCE of reducing child poverty. Get off your high horses; it's this warped, irrational pseudo-collectivist thinking that has led to insufficient levels of public services in this country because their funding (including employing and paying people to provide them) simply cannot keep up with population growth.

So you can't have kids if you're poor? Go and take your mouths for a shite you I'm alright Jacks. You'd rather everyone be old age and the govt then take pensions off us? Have a think about what you're all saying here, it's not hard to expand your minds, just put the Scum and Daily Fail down now and then and think for yourselves.

For all those self righteous assholes in the comments saying if you cant afford children dont have them –
    1) there is a demographic time bomb on the horizon as we have a rapidly aging population and there are more people retired than working
    2) if you have more than two children pray your relationship never breaks up and pray your financial circumstances don't take a dive.

A child cost and should be the responsibility of the parents not the government.

It's definitely not cruel….people were literally having children for the wrong reasons, and those children have turned out feral AF….i have one child, i can only afford one child….lets not keep making Britain lazy….but then we definitely have to stop giving migrants free money for contributing eff all to the country too…

It’s was and still is a good policy, if you can afford more than 2 kids well good luck to you. There is people I’ve known in the past that had more kids on purpose so they could rake in the benefits. This country is far far far to soft, too many do-gooders

There's nothing "cruel" about it. The only thing that's cruel is forcing working people who are already stretched to breaking to point to fund your lifestyle and take zero responsibility whatsoever.

If you can't afford to raise a 3rd child (I know we couldn't) then don't have one. It really is as simple as that.

Keeping children in poverty costs more long term. The numbers of children admitted to hospital with rickets and malnourishment has more than trebled in the last few years. It makes more sense to stop the tax loopholes and ensure the wealthiest are paying the right amount of tax. People on benefits don't hoard money, it's spent in shops and local businesses, they haven't got transport to go to out of town shopping centres . Shell are given massive tax breaks ,yet we are all paying extra for fuel. The wealthiest are robbing the poorest, and kier starmer is a disgrace to his party.

Don’t have that many kids. Just have one kid or none at all if you can’t afford it. I have my own business and work my arse off and couldn’t afford to look after three or even two kids

Love how in the comments people just talk about not having kids if you're too poor to afford kids. As if we live in an imaginary utopian world. This is the real life, and in the real life the poor will always continue to have kids. And people will always become poor. Poverty often puts young girls into unhealthy situations at a young age, as just one example why this issue is so big. My mother only had me. Meanwhile my aunt had a bunch of children. And at the time she could afford them, they were two working parents. And then came a split in the marriage and suddenly it was much harder to afford everything for the kids. Every working person that isn't from a whole different world of elite is at the end of the day only one catastrophic spend away from losing everything, especially these days. Families that are perfectly able to afford their life, home, kids, cars will and have already started to lose that privilege. Don't think yourselves so vastly better than the poor, you can't guarentee you won't be poor yourselves.

Meanwhile us young people are opting to not have kids in vast droves. When the generation before us is in need of care, there won't be enough people in work to pay for it in taxes, nor to actually do the care work. So I don't even expect to have a pension of any kind, as I expect the elderly will be one of the first to be thrown to the wolves, if the government's response to Covid was anything to go by. We will pay for the fact we're opting to not have kids. The state of the world and trauma has left me too mentally ill to go without medication long enough to have any anyways. But I don't think I'd choose to even if I could at this point. I know what way the world is oing, and it seems the people in power of any kind don't give a damn about it.
