In this video I’m photographing a newborn baby in the same pose twice. Once with my regular studio light (Godox speedlite in combination with the Westcott 50 inch apollo softbox) and once with daylight. Of course I could have moved my beanbag closer to the window, but my windows are already quite large. You see the Sooc (straight out of camera) images and my camera settings as well.
Here’s some of the items I use or a regular basis:
– camera’s Nikon D750 and Nikon D610
– lens Nikkor 24-70mm F2.8 for studio work- lens Tamron 90mm F/2.8 MACRO VC for Macro shots (baby details and wedding rings for example)
– lens Sigma Art 105mm F1.4 for outdoor sessions
– For Newborns, Babies and Cake Smashes: Godox Speedlite V860II Nikon X-PRO Duo kit with softbox Westcott 50 inch Recessed Front Apollo JS- For Portraits: Godox AD400 pro with Caruba Beauty Disk and/or Caruba Parabolic Sotbox
– For Newborns: Round backdrop stand Paloma Schell Classic Stand
– vinyl backdrops foxbackdrop and
– floormat white distressed wood
– cake smash bathtub and Flokati’s
– Vlog camera Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II compact camera

IMPORTANT
If you are interested in photographing newborn babies yourself I would highly recommend you to first learn about photography in general. Master you camera, photograph in the Manual mode, learn about aperture, iso, shutter speed, white balance, light and composition. Take photos of your friends (adults or very patient older kids) and make sure you don’t have to think about your camera anymore when photographing babies. Learn about editing as well. Please, don’t experiment photographing Newborn babies without training. Attend a workshop by an experienced and professional photographer with an expertise in Newborn Photography. Learn about the anatomy of babies and invest in good quality cameras, lenses and props. Babies are extremely vulnerable and small and their safety and comfort should be your highest priority. Start with simple poses and make sure you know and understand that many ‘pinterest poses’ are composites. Please, don’t try this at home. If you want beautiful photos of your own Newborn Baby, I highly recommend you to hire a professional and experienced photographer who is trained and specialised in Newborn Photography.

I wonder in this time, how many bean bags did you have? it looks like you are already using the Paloma Schell backdrop stand, but at 0:46 you mentioned you have the beanbag with flokati. I just got my PS backdrop stand today from another photographer going out of business, and I am so excited to use it!

I find my images with natural light tend to be softer. Which can give a dreamy effect, if that’s what i’m going for in the photo. Mainly, I prefer the tack sharp images I can get when using flash. Do you find this difference too in your images when using natural light as opposed to flash?
