Pantone Color of the Year Beauty Shoot | Inside Fashion and Beauty Photography with Lindsay Adler

This year’s Pantone Color of the Year is Viva Magenta, and I’m in love with it! This gorgeous color is magenta but shifted a bit more toward red. It is energetic, creative, bold, and perfect to get my creativity flowing.

For this beauty shoot, I asked my friend to make me an avant-garde headpiece, and she came up with something fun, alienesque, and right on brand for me/Pantone’s color.

I wanted something dramatic and rich, so I put together this setup.

Step 1:
I selected the Savage Universal Primary Red seamless background to reinforce the color palette.

Step 2:
The main light in the scene is the Westcott Optical Spot to create a tight pocket/slice of light on the subject’s face.

Step 3:
Next, I added a strobe with a red gel to fill in the shadows on the face with a red wash of color. This could be a bare strobe (no modifier) or a 10-degree if this light cast unwanted shadows upon the background.

Step 4:
The final light was placed on a floor stand directly behind the subject and pointed at the ground. They created a subtle gradient of light behind the subject for more depth/dimension.

Step 5:
For more creativity, I added a Tiffen 4 Point Star Filter to add starburst reflections on the gemstones of the headpiece.

Step 6:
Lastly, I went into CaptureOne to shift the colors more accurately toward the color of the year. I had chosen to shoot the image red (it was easier to find this color) and then shift those reds a bit more magenta to dial in the right hues!

These shots were captured with one of my favorite beauty lenses— the Canon R5 paired with the Canon RF 70-200mm lens.
