The last time I saw the "compression" effect and the actual effect of perspective and focal length/subject distance explained as well as here was in the (probably early) 80s in Modern Photography magazine, that showed a similar sequence of photos. Hearing the myths from other sources has driven me nuts for decades!

Damn all the other fancy product pushers, your explanation of lenses will keep the dinosaurs busy dissecting their words. The family photos explanation is an emotional subject. My grandfather gifted a small photo to my mom on her first childbirth , which was she 2 months old. I still remember her wet eyes explaining it when I became interested in photography as a youngster. This generation have a delete button, we didn't.

Hey there. I love your videos! But I'm afraid, I have to argue with you about the "compression" subject. Have you ever watched a formula 1 race shot with a very long focal length from in front of the contestants? there it always seems, they are very close to eachother. when they pass along shot from the side with a "normal" focal length, you really can see, they are much further away from eachother. that proves, long focal lengths compress the shot very much.
Even more dramatic and clearer effect you get, when you watch speakers in a parliament hall. usually they are filmed from far away with very long focal lengths. so their face look very flat, almost no depth. like pancakes. this again proves even better , a long focal length compresses the shot. … your turn 😉

Which camera /lense is good for high altitude captures of Passenger Jets . As i currently have Sony DSCHX350 … I've been happy with some of the captures but am looking for a camera with a lense that can give me better detail …
Bear in my mind my budget is limited I don't have very deep pockets to spend a fortune like some folks .
When i watch the numerous reviews of cameras on this site … i've found that specific subject matter is always ignored yet reviewers have the gaul .. to put up videos about Zoom qualities of certain camera's but can't prove it's ability of taking high altitudes captures of passenger jets …
Hi please explain how a 80mm Macro lens differs from say my Fuji 16-80mm lens with set to 80 mm. From what you have said the appearance of say a flower will look the same at the same distance? Not sure what they mean by magnification of 1 in their blurb for macro. What is the difference?

Oh wow! Spot on!!! I've been saying this for years and this explanation puts it perfectly into perspective (forgive the pun!). I love photography science. Halving, doubling, inverse square law, all at play here. My knowledge of this goes back to my technical illustration days when creating accurate perspective grids for conal vision of foveal vision. Now we need a video on why, "zooming with your feet" with a prime lens is utter nonsense 😉
Think Tank fan here. Mostly Retrospective or Vision, but I have Backlight for hiking. Also other messenger styles, plus a sling. Next is an Airport Advantage XT, I think.

Greetings from Pakistan. I must say this episode made me unlearn something that I learnt and believed for more than 30 years. No one has ever explained it better than Marcus, you did. Absolutely amazing. The family bits of your and other hosts really added a lot to this episode. I am so glad that I found this channel.
Another great episode, thanks. Harry was using a Canon RF 800mm f/11 lens for his parabolic mic item, which was followed by James talking about gimbals. James cheerfully noted that you can't use a gimbal for portrait format shots unless your lens has a tripod collar so you can rotate it. I'm currently struggling with this problem, I want to use a gimbal or similar with my RF 800mm but it has a tripod bush but no rotatable collar. Do you know of any solution to this?
There used to be a sort of L-bracket with hinged legs which allowed a mounted camera to be quickly and easily switched from landscape to portrait but I can no longer find it. Maybe it was from Speedgraphic, but I can't find it in their online catalogue.

Regarding the lens magnification, Its also has to do with the effect you visual see. That's why the misconception, is it easier to explain what you see by calling it compression.
On the subject of Family Portraits – Digital photography makes it all so easy to go through a memory card of photos and deleting the ones that "Just did not turn out"
I have found that it's best to never delete a photo, memory is just so cheap that it's a small price to pay when it turns out that the blurry or poorly lit image just may be the last photo of that family member ever taken.

Hi guys: Sorry for being late in responding to this great video. When it comes to camera bags, I have a closet full of different types. My primary bag is the LowePro – Pro Tactic 450AW. I also have a MindShift sling bag for trekking where I don't need to carry much equipment. Cheers, Keith
you have just proven that the focal length changes the perspective visualized on the photograph. Of course the physical distance does not change. It´s not about the linguistic terms, it´s about what we see on the photograph. And the focal length changes that dramatically even with the subject staying in the same proportion to the frame. Would be more interesting if you had concentrated on how depth of field is not changing because of the focal length if we agree to keep the subject proportions in the frame, because focal length impact on DoF is compensated by increasing distance from the subject. But the perspective (of what is in the frame, not just the subject), changes!
Great show, been a keen watcher since episode 1. However some of the team (let's call them Barry and Barcus) tend to drone on about something called 'The Scottish Weather'. There is no such thing! If you choose to live in a mountainous area like Skye or Wester Ross (or even the English Pond District) you can expect to get wet regularly. If you live in the East, for example Nairn, St Andrews or Dunbar, it's about as dry and sunny as Kent.
I totally enjoyed the explanation of F-stop and focal length. I have never heard it explained so clearly and accurately. As the presenter said, "It is what it is…" Thanks, I have finally understood.
You say tomato, I say tomata…when photographers talk about compression they generally mean keeping the foreground subject the same size and using focal length and distance from foreground subject to "compress" the background. While distance from the subject matters, so too does focal length as you change distance. You kinda proved that point in the first 14min.

so you telling me that to get that "compression" I should shoot at 12mm 16meters away and then crop the hell out of the shot, to get the result that I can get with the 200mm without croping? If the answer is 'no' then It is called compression, simple as that. The 200mm is compressing the background allowing the subject to take 75% of the frame while having the church look big in size. Cute model by the way!
