What is the best AGE to photograph a NEWBORN baby? Is a month too old? 8 days too young? Or is a newborn shoot only possible when the baby is less than 2 weeks old? Do you have to look at the due date or birth date? Is it important that the baby is back to their birth weight and controlling their temperature well?
Here’s some of the items I use or a regular basis:

IMPORTANT
If you are interested in photographing newborn babies yourself I would highly recommend you to first learn about photography in general. Master you camera, photograph in the Manual mode, learn about aperture, iso, shutter speed, white balance, light and composition. Take photos of your friends (adults or very patient older kids) and make sure you don’t have to think about your camera anymore when photographing babies. Learn about editing as well. Please, don’t experiment photographing Newborn babies without training. Attend a workshop by an experienced and professional photographer with an expertise in Newborn Photography. Learn about the anatomy of babies and invest in good quality cameras, lenses and props. Babies are extremely vulnerable and small and their safety and comfort should be your highest priority. Start with simple poses and make sure you know and understand that many ‘pinterest poses’ are composites. Please, don’t try this at home. If you want beautiful photos of your own Newborn Baby, I highly recommend you to hire a professional and experienced photographer who is trained and specialised in Newborn Photography.

My baby is 3 weeks old but she’s such a light sleeper. She has been sleeping like that since birth. The worst part is that she will not curl up so I can put her in the wrap for photoshoot. 😭 What do I do? This the moment I’ve been waiting for.
Your videos are just amazing! I have learned so much and you teach it in such an engaging yet detailed and efficient way.
My question is, when the parents first book, do you allocate a time and day to them then provisionally? Then when they contact you 3 days after the baby is born confirm this? What if the baby was to be born well after the due date? I am thinking this will be hard to manage, as babies can be early/late often etc, and you could end up with lots of unused time or not enough time. I would love some advice on how to handle this part!

You are so knowledgeable and educated! Thanks you for this. I used to do the in-hospital photos so I am used to babies in their 2nd-3rd day but since I started doing at home I have been having a hard time keeping them asleep.
I usually photograph in the family's home. I typically schedule for the first Saturday after family comes home from the hospital.
I have struggled with getting them to sleep, maybe this is why! Your sessions are so much shorter than mine too. I will try two or three weeks old next time! Thanks for the tips!

Love your thoughts & thanks for sharing your experience. Surprisingly, I was taught that the best time for newborn photo session is in between 4-14 days, that is under 2 weeks, because it's the time when baby's having real deep sleep and hardly awake til they feel hungry or uncomfortable. And baby would start having growth spurt after 14 days. They usually start being fussy at about 2-3 weeks. But I did photographed a 7 days baby boy, and he's very fussy and drinks a lot, then later I found out that he was born almost 2 weeks after due date. Now, I've learnt another insights from you. It's good to know. I would start take notice on baby's due date. Thanks! 😉

As for the video, I'm so surprised at the science of when to photograph a newborn. Fascinating! I wonder if there's something similar for children at other ages. My struggle is dealing with cavities and snaggleteeth – I love their smiles but oh boy is dental hygiene poor down here.

In Australia, I was in a special, low-risk program which meant I had the same midwife through my pregnancy. After birth, I had 2 midwife home visits in the first week post-partum, then 1 each week thereafter for 4 additional weeks. But, their visits were just to check our health. I really believe this program should be made available to all women regardless of risk (the continuity of care, specifically).
