I have the same setup but colour. I've been photographing family moments for too long. It's only recently that I'm trying to earn from this hobby so I haven't run into Hobby paradox. But I've been trying to remind myself that I started photographing others because I thought more people needs their life documented especially after they have kids cause these moments are fleeting. I think we started photographing mostly because we wanted to preserve this image in our heads. So if you remember this reasoning, it's even of more inportance to photograoh our own family.
Hi Gary. New sub and I'm from Booray's channel and a listener of Photobomb. Fantastic podcast 🙂 There is no shame in shooting jpeg. It's all about having fun and capturing a moment. I think professional photographer just wants every photos to be perfect, but for documentary style photo – it's all about the moment and memories, not about a perfect image (which is why many pro photographers love the fuji x100v).
At the end of the day, it's about having fun. Maybe you can try shooting film as a hobby as well.
I WAS a hobbyist photographer. About 5 years back, I reached that point when I asked myself if I am living a particular moment or more focused on capturing that moment in the best angle I can. That was when I decided to take a step back and give it a rest. Then onward, my wife has been the 'leading' photographer. Now, we have decided to upgrade to a full frame camera. While looking for reviews of Canon RP (our first choice, as of now) I came across your videos. And now I know what is to be done so that I can pursue my hobby without missing the real moments. Thank you!

Great video. I've adopted the same philosophy and same exact camera setup. I added the RF 50 1.8 as well since it was so cheap and so good. The "homework" analogy is spot on. Turning off the RAW option was so hard, but I feel much more free without it.

Beautiful pics, as usual. I have same issues with travel and photo gear, got a Nikon 24-200mm which is much bulkier than your setup, but works for me. Looking forward to downsizing again with the pending release of the 40mm pancake lens. Have a G7 Lumix which is perfectly light and portable , but the FF has me spoiled! Jpegs, with appropriate presets are perfect for travel and casual grabshots – with you knowing in advance the probable scenarios and presetting (just like before paid shoots!) to be ready. The point is – have fun, which means no fiddling with lens changes, extra flash lighting, etc. Spontaneity is key, grab the shot before it disappears. And have fun as you record priceless memories. Love the b/w suggestion, dedicating a function button for that. OOOOOPZ, that pro thing seeping in again …
Haven´t you learned anything from Booray? If you´re shooting jpg, buy a Fujifilm (just kidding. The RP is just fine) 😊

I'm so jealous Gary! You look and sound sooo natural in front of the camera! 👏🏼 I sound and look like s*** and struggle SO bad 🤣 Maybe you can consider doing a series on how to appear, sound, and what to prepare for shooting our own youtube videos lol. I for one will definitely love it!
I love the moments you captured of your beautiful family! They will be lucky to be able to look back at some fantastic memories.
I bring only my X-100f with the conversion lenses and one compact flash to family functions. Everything fits in a small sling bag and is really close to your pal Booray's 'travel kit'. I leave my work cameras at home because I know if I were to bring one of them I'd end up bringing my whole work kit with me(lenses/lights/stands/modifiers….). While I do record images in RAW + JPEG, I only mess with the RAW files if a really good shot needs it, or I decide it would look better in B&W. 99% of the time it's Classic Chrome straight out of camera.

yeah great way to look at it forced to take the best shots you can while confined to one lens and black white jpgs – i do see though some beautiful colour opportunities in your photos I know i would stray into colour too which I think would be totally fine!
Take lots of pictures of your kids. You may want to throw in a few color ones too. I know you like b & w but your kids may (in the future) want to see color. They grow up very fast. Before you know it they are off on their own. Been there and done that.
Short of going on a trip that the purpose is to take some memorable landscape shots, I try to just bring my film camera if I'm not being paid. Two reasons for this, one like you said, there's no 'homework' of editing images. Just send off the roll. But the second is something that the inconvenience of film provides. I'm not behind the camera the entire time because there's only a certain amount of photos I can take. The added bonus of it is that when you get the photos back, you can relive the day/memories again which isn't a 'built in' part of the experience in digital shooting.
