Nikon is the only company truly making a hybrid. Both Canon and Sony have a cinema line and are not going to make their more budget friendly cameras fully capable.

Pool related, while I was thinking going for it, I came to the conclusion that for the usage I have, hobbyist doing mostly portraits and no video, the Z7 delivers the exact same image quality. So maybe some Z7ii used price will drop, then no no Z8 for me. Came to the same conclusion when the Z9 got released. Will wait for a 60Mpix Nikon.
I have been waiting for this camera for the last 4 years. I am still not sure if I will upgrade to it or jump ship to Canon or Sony. It is a little to big and the AF is what gives me second thoughts.
Hi! Can you see IQ differences with d850 or z7? The z9 to me have a more artificiall look, not so natural la z7 and d850, for portraits and people is more noticeable….thanks!!
Z9 users can expect a firmware update with heif and airplane subject detection af in a few months 🙂

Nikon and Canon And Fuji cameras are very beautiful … sony ones are so ugly, same bodies for all their series and never change for 20 years, sony look so outdated … sony please wake up and stop cheaping your customers

I am really struggling to make a decision to return to Nikon. We had a Z7, but I was not happy with its auto focus and low-light performance. We have a Canon R3 and Fujifilm gear. We will either trade the Fujifilm gear in for a Canon R5 or a Nikon Z8. I am not convinced (as yet) whether I want to migrate from the R3 to the Z8. If the Z8 has equivalent auto focus and low light performance, then I could switch. We always liked the sharp images that we got out of our Nikon DSLR's and Z7. What are your thoughts?
Z8 seems to really only make sense as an upgrade from a Z7/Z7II if you actually need the improved AF and burst performance. I’m not sure it does much to move the game on from a landscape perspective. That doesn’t mean I don’t want one though.
As always, a great perspective on what looks like my preferred camera. But until i get the chance my fantastic Z7 with all its niggles will be wowing me with its superb ability to get great pictures😊
Definitely getting Z8. Have to trade Z6 and Z7 ii and a few lenses but will be well worth it.

I find this review to be a little overzealous compared to your other reviews. The other Matt, Matt Granger does a more comprehensive review on this camera.
I am currently using a pair of Z6II's for both still and video. I am constantly getting "Card Overheating" messages when shooting video outdoors on hot days. Do you know if this has been addressed with the Z8 – Z9?
It’s a mini Z9 that overheats twice as fast in video mode and has no gps and no built in grip and half the the battery life and has less of a buffer.

Wait for 15 years Nikon Z8 cameras still do not have flip screen to vary-angle selfies, body size and weight big and heavy, I have to change to Canon for R6II camera which is lighter and have vary-angle flip screen.
¨This camera is a wonderful achievement and I ordered one. But the price politic applied in Switzerland goes against every economic understanding! It is around CHF 500 to expensive, that's a shame Nikon Europe!!
You recommended waiting for the Z8 (at the time no one was sure what it was actually going to be.) Having purchased a D850 six (6) months before Nikon announced its first mirrorless, you suggested patience in upgrading right away. You said to let the technology finess, etc. So, I did and I have to thank you for your advise. I have a great D850 and I love it and may not sell it…but I have already ordered the Z8 and I can't wait to experience mirrorless. I'm sure it will be different and take time getting used to, but I am soooo ready. Thanks again for your enthusiasm for Nikon!
The Z8 is not the camera for me.
Still no built-in GPS after thirty years.
Still no built-in memory for extra convenience.
Still stupid XQD/CFexpress slot.
I will probably get a second Leica SL (Typ 601) for gimbal use as an addition to my SL with the vertical grip for photography and manual focus glass.
My second system ist the Hasselblad H which I can upgrade to magnificent 50 megapixel CCDs when I feel to. The H cameras have also built-in GPS.
For street photography my Leica M cameras are the way to go.

Alright, let the internet frenzy begin for the Z10! 🙂 Surely a firmware update will be out in a couple of weeks for my Z9. Ricci 'feels' like the 8's AF is better than the Z9's… So I'm expecting that boost to come to the Z9 real soon (along with little things like airplane recognition). Another amazing bit of kit from Nikon. Now hopefully we can all talk about making photos for a while and give the 'what's new?' pursuits a rest…. Yah, I know, I'm delusional 🙂 Thanks for your insights, as always. Cheers!
Exciting camera. I find it interesting that its processor is 10 times faster than the z6ii/z7ii, but the z6/z7 is half that, yet the performance between the z6ii and z6 is almost identical. Makes me thing there is more they can do with the z6ii, and in turn much more that they can do with the z8/9. I hope they keep improving the z6ii
Thanks for this thorough video on the Z8! I was hoping they’d come out with the Z6iii before the Z8, but I think I may buy the Z8, and then get the Z6iii when it is released.
I was anxious to see early reviews and specs but was very disappointed. Not in the camera but the Nikon community. Days of bitching and complaining that its tech was already 2 years old, it has nothing to offer, Nikon is crashing, it is a deal breaker having no advantage over a 2 year old camera that that can't focus. …
I stopped even clicking on any more Z8 posts. What is wrong with people that makes them jump to so many baseless conclusions. They vote, that is a scary thought.
I want the camera, I do not need it and can't afford it right now since 3 of my income sources have been impacted by Covid, than sanctions by US Europe and Japan so no Nikon can be imported right now. My D850 is backup to my Z6, which does all I need it to do commercial photography, primarily actor portfolios. That also bugs me, with everyone complaining about the Z bodies having use AF. I shoot a lot and the keeper rate with a Z6 ver 1 is higher than any DSLR I have used including D5. The mirror means never being as sharp as in clunky Live View, as expected. If I do a 2 day master class for actors, and take 600 frames and get 2 less than optimum sharpness with a 85 1.8 S or 70-200 2.8 S, that is perfectly fine with me, and better than any second shooter with their Sony or Canon.
I have deleted all my subs to camera groups on FB and all but 2 on Youtube because the nonsense negativity and ignorance. It is not the camera why people get less than optimum photos. It is them.
Anyone: I’ve got some Sony 120 xqd cards that I may as well use with z8. Any thoughts on which sd card to get? (Ref Wedding photography) I will use the z9 for faster frames as req. thank you.
I was so convinced that the Z8 would be a high megapixel camera, that I didn’t bother to wait for it. So bought the Z9 when it come. Since I now have the Z9 I would not by a Z8.
Can you do a battery and card overheating test of 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 at 24fps & 30fps in ProRes and H.265? Want to get an idea of what I’m expecting for recording long-form video interviews.

Finally, a stacked sensor in much lower price. I really hate rolling shutter in a clips, that’s a big fail for me. Stacked sensor all the way! Lol
